Dr.
Hendrik Fransen MD in interventional neuroradiology
Dr. H. Fransen is head of the interventional neuroradiology of AZ
Sint Lucas, Ghent, Belgium. He is equally resident at the University of
Antwerp at the department of interventional procedures.
He started to use the vertebroplasty technique in 1994, shortly after
its introduction. The advantages of minimally invasive procedures for
the management of spinal disorders and pain, prompted him to build a
department where the whole range of those procedures can be performed.
This department operates in a multidisciplinary spirit where the team of
neurologists, neurosurgeons, physiotherapist and orthopedic surgeon
jointly evaluate and treat patients with painful syndromes emanating
from the spine. Currently kyphoplasty, vertebroplasty, nucleoplasty,
annuloplasty, radiofrequency and neuromodulation techniques are
frequently used in the department.
Besides the problems related to the spine, the department, in
cooperation with the neurologist and other specialties manage cerebral
patients, covering the whole neurological interventional pallet of
aneurysm repair to atrovenous malformation embolization.
The department participated in several randomized multi center trials
on vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty. It is the department's goal to help
in the accurate training of colleagues in the practical execution of
vertebroplasty, where a perfect positioning of the cannula, aided by
correct use of the fluoroscopic imaging and control during the injection
of bone cement at the right time are crucial for successful treatment
and limitation of the side effects and complications. From a theoretical
point of view much attention is paid to the correct patient selection.
Dr. Fransen is often asked to lecture at international congresses where
he lately covered the topic on complications and contra-indications of
vertebroplasty in the management of traumatic lesions in young patients.
But, also the use of vertebroplasty in older patients suffering
osteoporotic compression fractures can only be done after having
received an accurate training, which should help to minimize
complications and improve the results.
